“Line up, line up, let’s go,” whispered Mr Fortune. On a cold October morning, we were off to play in the Luton Schools Tag Rugby Competition. On time and excited, we deposited our belongings and went to the pitch where we warmed up ready for our first game. It was going to be a tough one. We faced St Joseph’s Primary school; district cup winners, county cup winners and having a team full of Luton Rugby club players. It started well with our team attacking for a long period and then the ball was dropped. St Joseph’s gained possession and quickly used their experience to run up the field and score. This pattern was repeated several time and we lost 6-0. The students were pretty low, but a few words of encouragement and they were back on track for the next game.

Dressed all in black, William Austin looked formidable, but with an early try from Hussain Khan, followed by tries from Bisma Zeb, Fillip Rykaczewski and Zofeen Khan we took and held the lead to win 4-1. Bramingham Primary School were a much tougher opposition but Arham Durrani and Ali Hassan stepped up to calm the nerves and score to leave the result a close 2-1 win to Beechwood. Tired but keen we played Icknield Primary school straight afterwards. Arham Durrani and Ali Hasan scored once again only to be joined on the score sheet by Ibrahim Azhar who scored twice to leave the score 4-2 win for Beechwood.

This meant that we had won 3, lost one and were runners up in group A. As it turned out we were the best runners up in the whole of the competition, but that meant we were drawn against St Joseph’s again, in the quarter finals. We did better for long periods of the game, but we lost 5-0, knocking us out of the competition.

Beechwood staff and pupils are very proud of the efforts and achievements of this team who were really competitive and played some very good rugby. Arham Durrani was scouted by Luton Rugby Club and given a letter asking for him to attend their club.
